After starting the New Year right (with loud ass music and Champagne of course). We packed up our belongings and drove a whole minute to our breakfast destination! The Getaway Cafe is a small restaurant, so you might have to wait if they’re busy. However, the service was phenomenal--the manager personally came to our table just to check in on our party. Just off 50, The Getaway Cafe is a great (and quick) stop to fuel up before heading over the pass and down the mountain. I would definitely stop here again, next time without a hangover…

Coffee (Natalia): Pretty good coffee at this joint! Plus constant refills. Black per usual.

Chorizo Scramble (Natalia): I’m super big on trying specials, especially if I know going there won’t be a regular occurance. So I went with something that sounded hearty and delicious--AKA lots of protein and cheese! Overall the Scramble was excellent, I prefer having my cheese in my eggs rather than on top of them, honestly. The eggy combo of peppers, chorizo, cheese and avocado was heavenly and I devoured this rather quickly. Plus the hash browns were cooked perfection, I was happy the serving was on the smaller side, because I know I would have eaten more if there was more…

Banana Walnut Pancakes (Natalia was tag-teamed to help finish them): These pancakes were perfection. I love bananas. I love walnuts. I love pancakes. I’m sensing a theme here! Plus the serving was huge, hence me needing to help eat them. The pancakes weren’t too fluffy and were cooked to perfection.

Classic Breakfast (Debra): I customized mine’s, and it was simply just two eggs over easy and some type of sauce, sausage links, and country fried potatoes. This is definitely a hearty breakfast, designed to keep you satisfied for a while. This is a cute and bustlin’ breakfast place that is so conveniently off of the 50, and the owner was super friendly and made sure to greet us when we sat at the table. That contributed to an overall pleasant experience at the cafe 😆

It was actually good hearty food, and sometimes that’s what needed after dancing away at a music festival for a couple of days. The country-fried potatoes were crispy and soft on the inside, and it had such good flavor. I totally would come back again if I was in the area!


Snowglobe 2018 Festival Food


Snowglobe was the whole reason Debra and I planned this little Tahoe trip in the first place, so of course we have a post featuring the eats we had there! We went all three days, and tried to not eat too much there (aka spend too much money). However, we still had our fair share of food after dancing all the freaking cold ass night...


Natalia: They had plenty of beer and mixed drinks up for offer, nothing that really stood out really. Good beer and good Don Julio Margs!


Natalia: Perfect drunk woman’s fuel honestly. Got the carbs (in the form of salty chips), fake cheese, real cheese, beans and some steak. And when you’re freezing, you can sure eat a plate of nachos real quick. For food stand nachos, these were pretty delicious. Obviously overly salty, but all the toppings were spot on! Even the steak was pretty tasty.

Debra: I also ordered a plate of nachos cause Natalia and I were both pretty hungry, so we knew that we weren’t going to share food. For what it was, and for where we were, I will also say that they were tasty. Especially cause we were freezing and we wanted something really hot. I dislike the nacho fake cheese, but in the moment, it was alright. The meat was yummy too!

Stir Fry Noods

Natalia: One can never go wrong with noodles, especially stir fried in a giant wok. For price point, these noodles were the best deal at the festival for food. The flavour was good, especially with a fat dollop of Sriracha mixed in! It was a well balanced meal actually: chicken, broccoli and noods galore. Only con was it was also too salty.

Debra: Honestly, these noodles were the best thing in Snowglobe. It was a good portion of food in that takeout container, it had veggies in it (when one travels, one hardly eats veggies, so this was needed), and it was saucy. It was a little salty, but it was hot and definitely warmed us up, so it was okay. What’s a little salt when we were dancing and shivering at the same time! We ordered this several times, as noodles are always comforting!

Funnel Cake
Natalia: Saw someone with one and had to have one of course! However, due to the loud ass music, I thought Debra wanted to share--so I got strawberries on top (I hate toppings on my funnel cake, but I was trying to be a good friend here!) Debra helped eat some, despite my confusion, alas I still had strawberries ruining my pure cake. I could have lived with it if the strawberry sauce was hot, but for some reason the strawberries were that was gross. The funnel cake itself was super delicious! No regrets, glad I got it!

Debra: The strawberries were soooo sweet! Probably why I didn’t eat that much of it, but I still ate it! -mumble mumble- I really enjoyed the funnel cake itself, but Natalia didn’t have to get strawberries- I could have just eaten the cake itself as well. I always enjoy a good funnel cake, however it’s a bit difficult to enjoy it when it’s 30 degrees.

Blue Dog Gourmet Pizza

Blue Dog has some of the best (and only) pizza up in Lake Tahoe. They have two locations on the South side and are definitely worth a try when you’re in the area. If you decide to sit and eat, they have a lovely selection of craft beers as well! Blue Dog’s pizzas are delicious, even though they’re a little pricey for how much you get. However, the good quality of their pizza does mean you gotta cough up a little extra cash. Plus a cabin party trip isn’t complete without some gratuitous pizza...right!? The group got two medium pizzas to share (honestly should have made these large or extra large, but we still had food leftover back at the cabin).

Hawaiian Pizza & Meaty Combo Pizza

Natalia: They serve standard “American” style pizza (AKA not NY style or Chicago style). The crust is tasty, perfectly crunchy and strong enough to hold my slice nice and stable. Not enough sauce for my liking maybe a little on the sweet side, but enough to do its job! Blue Dog did good work with their toppings, a nice even spread across the whole pie. And as stated before, they use quality ingredients and you can definitely taste that. My only critiques would be: more cheese please and if you’re wondering what size to get here---order the bigger one!

Debra: You know, I don’t discriminate against pizza. I’ll eat it whether it’s thin-crust, thick-crust, deep dish, I’ll eat it all. EXCEPT for Hawaiian pizza. I already don’t like pineapple, so I wouldn’t order that as a topping. I had a good slice of pizza- the toppings didn’t fall off, the sauce was yummy- I will agree with Natalia that they should put MORE cheese on the pizzas. I usually don’t prefer all meat-combos because the pizza tends to be very salty, but this particular pizza was Blue Dog Gourmet Pizza wasn’t.

Tahoe Hot Pot

Debra, Linda, Jennifer and I all thought the perfect way to start a snowy adventure was with a hot meal. So some hot pot fit the bill perfectly! The restaurant is just a little outside the main part of town. Which is nice, since there’s less traffic and much less busy. We were seated immediately and decided on sharing a large entree between the four of us. (Which in retrospect was probably not the best idea, since both Debra and I can EAT--don’t worry we didn’t starve, plenty of snacks at the cabin!) The service at Tahoe Hot Pot was very fast and they were very attentive, definitely recommend if you want a tasty healthy warmup.

Water (Both): ice cold and always refilled!

Hot Pot Shabu (Both): The group shared a half and half Miso and Tahoe Soup with large order of beef. Which included udon (and we got some extra ramen) and a small platter of vegetables. The broths were both good; however the Miso was the more flavourful of the two and we finished it quite quickly. The Tahoe Soup was good, but it was missing some flavour or spice to make it a complete broth. The vegetables were rudimentary as were the steak slices. Both types of noodles were fresh and went well with the broths. Their sauces were quite good, but the flavour of the miso broth was good enough to stand on its own.

Debra: I love me some hot pot, especially when it’s cold outside. I agree with Natalia that the miso broth had way more flavor than the Tahoe Soup one. We didn’t get too many toppings cause we wanted to save room for the rest of the day! The noodles were my favorite toppings, as the steak slices were just satisfactory to me. The sauces were yummy though!

So much good food in close vicinity to each other….must be SF! Another one of Debra’s finds and it was a delicious one. I was much too full to attempt to eat any more food; however I got some to go. One needs fancy cookies on the plane home right?

Walking up to the shop was very promising, considering I could smell the goods wafting down the street. The second good sign was the constant influx and efflux of people. The last and most important fact was their very delicious looking baked goods!

The bakery itself is very cute, with some fun interior design choices. AKA the pink halogen light, perfect for a brief photo-op. Besides that, they seem to let their baked goods do the metaphorical talking. Nicely lined up or stacked behind the glass shield just beckoning you to take a few home with you.

Debra: “OMG this place doesn’t have a line anymore, let’s check it out!”

When I was walking to Korean Tapas Aria’s, I noticed there was a long line, but I didn’t really pay attention to it cause I was too focused on Korean Tapas Aria’s. However, as we walked back in that direction, I immediately said that we must stop here since there wasn’t a line anymore.


I didn’t buy anything for me, just pastries for Natalia. LOL. I’ve also seen this place on Instagram, but it didn’t even occur to me to check if it was on the same street as Korean Tapas Aria’s. As we were walking past, I noticed that there was no line, and I quickly persuaded Natalia to stop by (poor Katrina- she was quite full and couldn’t consume any more food at the point).

It is such a cute and hipster bakery! Of course, there’s the famous neon sign “I GOT BAKED IN SAN FRANCISCO” that everyone takes a photo of and with.


I took a bite of the cookie, and it had the right texture that a cookie should have- soft on the inside yet a crunchy outside.

Also, how could you not buy anything from this bakery?! All the pastries are totes insta-worthy, and they make everything in-house.

Natalia (Sea Salt Chocolate Cookie, Cornflake Cookie, Matcha Croissant, Plum Pastry):

I saved most of these noms for later, because after a giant-ass-donut and some (a lot) KFC...I was a little full honestly. Everything was super delicious. The Matcha Croissant was perfectly flaky and the matcha flavour really came through. I would defto come back here just for the buttery croissant! The Plum Pastry was my ‘odd’ pick that I had to try. The tartness of the plum really pulled the pastry together. I preferred the Croissant, but I wouldn’t say no to the pastry if it was offered to me!

As for the cookies, they were magnificent. Debra encouraged me to get the Cornflake Cookie and it was a real winner. The extra crunchiness added some extra oomph to the texture. Combined with the toffee flavour this was my favourite item from Mr. Holmes! The Sea Salt Cookie is a classic and a great way to judge a bakery. And Holmes passed with flying colours. Good chocolate to cookie ratio, and you can just taste the quality ingredients. Plus the semi-crunchy outside and gooey-soft inside of both cookies (which I find essential) completes the cookie package!
